Sri Vamanaya Namah · Trivikramaya Namah · Sriman Narayana Charanau Sharanam Prapadye

Salutations to Sri Vamana — to Sri Trivikrama (he who measured the three worlds in three steps) — at the lotus feet of Sriman Narayana I take refuge.

How to recite

Sri Vamana appeared on Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi under Sravana nakshatra — the same nakshatra and tithi (Vijaya Dwadashi) on which he measured the three worlds in three steps and granted Mahabali patala. At Tirukoyilur (the Tiruvikrama divya-desam where Vamana grew to his cosmic Trivikrama form), full sahasrabhishekam is performed. Recite the Sri Vamana Avatara katha from the Bhagavatam (8th skanda), the Vamana Stotram, and the Trivikrama Stotram. Donate three things to a brahmana — til, jaggery, and ghee — in remembrance of King Mahabali's three-step gift. Onam (Tiruvonam Sravana nakshatra in Tamil month Avani — Mahabali's annual visit to his subjects in Kerala) often falls within the same week.

Benefits

Sri Vamana is the fifth of the Dashavatara — the dwarf-Brahmin who restored cosmic order from the demon-king Mahabali through three steps that spanned the three worlds, and yet granted Mahabali sovereignty over Patala forever for his unwavering generosity. Worship on Sri Vamana Jayanti (Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi + Sravana) confers the merit of all charity multiplied threefold — and grants Mahabali's quality of unwavering dana even in adverse circumstances. Onam in Kerala commemorates Mahabali's annual return.
