Brahmotsavam — the nine-day annual festival of Sri Venkateswara at Tirumala (typically in Purattasi / Ashvin), and parallel celebrations at Srirangam, Kanchipuram, Melukote, and other major divya-desams. The deity is taken on nine different vahanas through the temple streets. Garuda Sevai (day 5) is the most attended single procession, drawing over half a million devotees.

Mantra

गोविन्दा गोविन्दा श्रीनिवास गोविन्दा

Govinda Govinda Srinivasa Govinda

O Govinda, O Govinda, O Srinivasa Govinda — the chant that fills the seven hills of Tirumala throughout Brahmotsavam.

How to recite

Brahmotsavam runs for nine days. Each day Sri Venkateswara (or Sri Ranganatha at Srirangam) is taken in procession on a different vahana (mount): Pedda Sesha Vahana, Hamsa, Simha, Muthyapu Pandiri, Kalpa Vriksha, Sarva Bhupala, Mohini Avatar, Garuda, Hanumantha, and finally the Golden Chariot (Swarna Ratham). Recite Suprabhatam at Brahma-muhurta and Govinda-naam continuously.

Benefits

Brahmotsavam is the grandest annual festival of every Sri Vaishnava divya-desam. The festival commemorates the original consecration performed by Brahma himself. Witnessing a Brahmotsavam is held in the Sri Vaishnava agama tradition to grant the merit of a year of Tirumala-darshan.

✦ Special Note

Tirumala's Brahmotsavam dates are set by the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanam each year. Garuda Sevai is the spiritual peak — Vakulamalika (the divine mother) blesses Sri Venkateswara from her shrine as he passes. Dates follow the SriVaishnava Calendar of Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam (andavan.org/srivaishnavacalendar/), Tenkalai convention; Vadakalai households may observe Ahobila Mutt Panchangam dates, which can differ by a day on some Ekadashi/Utsav observances.
