Mantra

श्रीशैलेश दयापात्रं धीभक्त्यादि गुणार्णवम् · यतीन्द्रप्रवणं वन्दे रम्यजामातरं मुनिम्

Sri-Sailesha Daya-Patram Dhi-Bhaktyadi Gunarnavam · Yatindra-Pravanam Vande Ramya-Jamataram Munim

I bow to the recipient of Sri-Sailesha's (Tiruvaymozhi Pillai's) compassion — the ocean of wisdom, devotion, and all virtues — devoted utterly to Yatindra (Sri Ramanuja) — the beautiful son-in-law (Ramya-Jamatara) Muni: Sri Manavala Mamunigal. This is the Vazhi-Tirunamam recited as the closing arati invocation at Srirangam every day — by direct order of Sri Ranganatha himself.

How to recite

At Alwarthirunagari (his birthplace) and Srirangam (where he established the eight ashtadig-gajas — the eight pre-eminent Tenkalai disciples), full sahasrabhishekam is performed. Recite the Upadesha Ratna Mala (his Tamil masterwork on Sri Vaishnava upadesha), the Tiruvaymozhi Nootrandadi, the Yatiraja Vimsati (his 20-verse stotram on Sri Ramanuja). Read the Acharya Hridayam and the Iyal Sattumurai. Sri Ranganatha himself recited the Vazhi-Tirunamam of Sri Manavala Mamuni in 1430 CE — the only acharya so honoured directly by the Lord.

Benefits

Sri Manavala Mamunigal (1370-1443 CE), also called Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Nayanar and Yatindra Pravanar, is the foremost Tenkalai poorvacharya — the great revitaliser of the Sri Bhashya tradition after Sri Vedanta Desika. Sri Ranganatha himself, in the form of a young brahmachari student at Srirangam, sat at his feet for one full year while he expounded the Tiruvaymozhi commentaries — and in gratitude composed the Vazhi-Tirunamam, recited even today at every Sri Ranganatha sannidhi. Worship on his tirunakshatram (Aippasi + Tiruvadirai/Ardra) grants his direct grace and the merit of his Granthamala parayanam for a year.

Dates follow the SriVaishnava Calendar of Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam (andavan.org/srivaishnavacalendar/), Tenkalai convention; Vadakalai households may observe Ahobila Mutt Panchangam dates, which can differ by a day on some Ekadashi/Utsav observances.
