Mantra

ॐ नमो नारायणाय

Om Namo Narayanaya

Salutations to Sri Narayana — the Sri Vaishnava Ashtakshara mantra that opens the gates of Vaikuntha.

How to recite

Begin with Suprabhatam at Brahma-muhurta. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama, the Tiruppavai (in Margazhi), and a chapter of Tiruvaymozhi. At dawn, walk through the Vaikuntha-Dwaram (the north gate, opened only on this day) at any major Sri Vaishnava temple. Maintain naam-japa continuously. Parana on Dwadashi morning after sunrise abhishekam.

Benefits

On this single day Sri Narayana opens the Vaikuntha-Dwaram (Northern Gate of Vaikuntha) and grants liberation to those who pass through. Tirumala-Tirupati, Srirangam, Kanchipuram, and every other Sri Vaishnava divya-desam open their northern gates from Brahma-muhurta. Held by Ramanujacharya to be the holiest day of the year.

✦ Special Note

At Srirangam, Lord Ranganatha is brought through the Paramapada-vasal (Vaikuntha gate) in the famous Sorgavaasal procession. Only on this one day of the year is this gate opened. Dates follow the SriVaishnava Calendar of Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam (andavan.org/srivaishnavacalendar/), Tenkalai convention; Vadakalai households may observe Ahobila Mutt Panchangam dates, which can differ by a day on some Ekadashi/Utsav observances.
