Mantra

ज्ञानानन्दमयं देवं निर्मलस्फटिकाकृतिम् · आधारं सर्वविद्यानां हयग्रीवमुपास्महे

Jnana-Ananda-Mayam Devam Nirmala-Sphatika-Akritim · Adharam Sarva-Vidyanam Hayagrivam Upasmahe

We worship Sri Hayagriva — the Lord who is wisdom and bliss, of pure crystal form, the foundation and refuge of all knowledge.

How to recite

Sravana Purnima is also Avani Avittam (the annual Yajnopavitam-renewal day for Brahmins) and Hayagriva Jayanti. Brahmins perform sahaapahara samhita-japam, replace the sacred thread, and offer tarpan. At every Sri Vaishnava home and mutt, full Hayagriva sahasranamam is recited. At Thiruvaheendrapuram (where Sri Lakshmi-Hayagriva blessed Sri Vedanta Desika and granted him the mantra), full sahasrabhishekam is performed. Recite the Sri Hayagriva Stotram of Sri Vedanta Desika (32 verses) — the most powerful mantra-stotra of all Sri Vaishnava literature for vidya, vak-shuddhi, and clarity of thought.

Benefits

Sri Hayagriva is Vishnu's horse-faced incarnation who slew the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, recovered the stolen Vedas, and restored them to Brahma. He is the lord of all vidya — every Sri Vaishnava acharya from Sri Yamunacharya to Sri Vedanta Desika invoked him before composing any sastra. Worship on his Jayanti (Sravana Purnima) grants brahma-vidya, vak-siddhi, mastery of any sastra one studies, and direct restoration of any knowledge lost. Brahmins observe Avani Avittam Upakarma — the annual renewal of the Yajnopavitam — on the same day.

✦ Special Note

The Vadakalai sub-tradition observes Avani Avittam (Upakarma) on Sravana Purnima with Yajur Veda; the Tenkalai sub-tradition follows the same date. Sama Vedis observe Upakarma on a different day (Hasta nakshatra in Bhadrapada). Dates follow the SriVaishnava Calendar of Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam (andavan.org/srivaishnavacalendar/), Tenkalai convention; Vadakalai households may observe Ahobila Mutt Panchangam dates, which can differ by a day on some Ekadashi/Utsav observances.
