Maharshi Dayananda Nirvana Diwas — observed on Karthika Krishna Amavasya (the night of Diwali) to mark the mahaprayan of Maharshi Dayananda Saraswati at Ajmer in 1883. Arya Samaj observes Diwali as a day of solemn havan, reading and ghee-diya lighting — without crackers.

Mantra
ॐ अग्ने नय सुपथा राये अस्मान् विश्वानि देव वयुनानि विद्वान्
Om agne naya supatha raye asman vishvani deva vayunani vidvan
O Agni, lead us by the good path to prosperity, O Lord who knows all our actions — the very mantra Maharshi Dayananda recited as his last breath on Diwali night, 1883.
How to recite
Observe the day with restraint — minimal household celebration, no crackers, only ghee diyas and a quiet evening havan dedicated to Maharshi. Read the final chapter of Satyarth Prakash and the Maharshi's last days as recorded in 'Maharshi Dayananda Ka Jeevan Charitra' by Pandit Lekhram. Many Arya families fast partially during the day and break only after evening havan.
Benefits
Maharshi Dayananda left his body on Karthika Krishna Amavasya, Vikram Samvat 1940 (30 October 1883 CE) at Ajmer — the very night of Diwali — after months of suffering from poisoning at Jodhpur. His last words, recorded by his disciples, were the recitation of the Yajurveda mantra 'Om agne naya supatha raye asman'. For Arya Samajis, Diwali is therefore observed as Maharshi Dayananda Nirvana Diwas — a day of solemn yajna and reading, rather than the loud crackers-and-mithai festival of mainstream Hindu Diwali. Lighting of ghee diyas symbolises the lamp of knowledge he kindled.
