Thai Poosam (Thaipusam) — the great kavadi-attam festival of Murugan. Falls on Pushya (Poosam) nakshatra in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan-Feb). Palani's Dhandayuthapani temple atop the hill is the most attended in Tamil Nadu — millions climb the 690 steps barefoot. Outside India, Thaipusam is the largest Hindu festival in Malaysia (Batu Caves), Singapore (Sri Thendayuthapani Temple), and Mauritius.

Mantra

ॐ शरवणभव

Om Saravana-Bhava

Salutations to Murugan, who appeared in the lotus-pond of saravana — the six-syllable Shadakshara mantra of Subramanya.

How to recite

Thai Poosam falls on Pushya (Poosam) nakshatra in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan-Feb), close to Thai Purnima. Maintain a strict day-fast (phalahar only). Carry a kavadi (decorated wooden arch) to a Murugan temple — Palani, Tiruchendur, Swamimalai, Tiruparankundram, Pazhamudircholai, and Tiruttani (the Aru Padai Veedu) host the largest kavadi processions. Recite the Kanda Shashti Kavasam and the Subramanya Bhujangam.

Benefits

Thai Poosam commemorates the day Devi Parvati gave Murugan the Vel (divine spear) to vanquish the asura Soorapadman. The kavadi-attam ritual — devotees carrying flower-decked or milk-pot kavadis on their shoulders for kilometres — is the most physical expression of Murugan-bhakti. Worship on this day grants protection, victory over obstacles, and the warrior virtues of Skanda.

✦ Special Note

Palani's Thai Poosam abhishekam to Dhandayuthapani at Brahma-muhurta is the spiritual peak. Devotees carry pal-kavadi (milk pots) and flower-kavadis up the hill. Some perform alagu-kuttuthal (cheek-spear piercing) as ultimate vow — done only with prior 48-day vrat. Dates per the Thirukanthika Panchangam (Tamil Shaiva almanac, Chennai reckoning).
