Bogi — the Tamil Shaiva harvest-thanksgiving observed on the eve of Thai Pongal. Old items are burned at dawn in the Bogi-mantalu and the home is cleaned and decorated with fresh kolam in preparation for the four-day Pongal cluster.

Mantra

ॐ इन्द्राय नमः

Om Indraya Namaha

Salutations to Indra, lord of rain and the abundant harvest.

How to recite

Bogi is observed on the last day of the Tamil month Margazhi as a thanksgiving to Indra for the past year's harvest. Households clean the home, discard old/broken things in the Bogi-mantalu (small bonfire of old wood and worn-out items) at dawn, draw fresh kolam at the threshold, and prepare the home for the Pongal cluster beginning the next morning.

Benefits

Bogi clears the home and the heart of the old year so the new harvest cycle (Uttarayana) can begin clean. Worship of Indra grants timely rains and household prosperity through the coming year.

✦ Special Note

Per the Thirukanthika Panchangam — observed in Tamil Shaiva homes across Tamil Nadu. Bogi is always one day before Thai Pongal (the day before the sun enters Makara rashi). Dates per the Thirukanthika Panchangam (Tamil Shaiva almanac, Chennai reckoning).
