Ayudha Pooja — the 9th day of Navaratri (Maha Navami), observed in Tamil Shaiva homes as the worship of all tools, books, instruments and vehicles alongside Saraswati Puja. Every implement of the household and workplace is cleaned, decorated, and worshipped; the next day (Vijayadashami) marks the auspicious Vijaya-arambham — the formal restart of all work.

Mantra

ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः

Om Aim Saraswatyai Namaha

Salutations to Goddess Saraswati, the giver of all knowledge, art and skill.

How to recite

Ayudha Pooja is observed on the 9th day of Navaratri (Maha Navami), one day before Vijayadashami. Every tool of the household and the workplace — kitchen utensils, books, musical instruments, vehicles, computers, weaving looms, agricultural implements, doctors' instruments, artists' brushes — is cleaned, decorated with turmeric, kumkum, sandal paste and flowers, and worshipped with arati. Saraswati Puja is performed alongside, with books and instruments placed at the altar; no work, study or vehicle-use is undertaken on this day. The next day (Vijayadashami), the same tools are taken up again with the formal Vijaya-arambham — the auspicious restart of all work.

Benefits

Ayudha Pooja honours every tool and instrument as a manifestation of Saraswati (the giver of skill) and Durga (the granter of victory through right action). Worship grants mastery of the craft, freedom from accidents in the coming year, and the ayudha-shakti (instrument-energy) blessings of Shiva — held in the Tirumantiram of Tirumular as the foundation of the artisan-bhakti tradition that has built every Shaiva temple in Tamil Nadu.

✦ Special Note

Per the Thirukanthika Panchangam — Ayudha Pooja falls on Maha Navami of Sharada Navaratri (October 19th in 2026), one day before Vijayadashami. Major observances at every Tamil Shaiva home, every workshop, school and government office across Tamil Nadu. Dates per the Thirukanthika Panchangam (Tamil Shaiva almanac, Chennai reckoning).
