Dasara (Vijayadashami) — Telugu observance of the nine-night Sharadiya Navaratri culminating on the tenth day with Ayudha Pooja, Saraswati Pooja, the bommala koluvu doll display, and the jammi-leaf exchange, marking Durga's victory over Mahishasura and Rama's victory over Ravana.
Dates 2026–2027
Mantra
ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे । सर्वमङ्गल माङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके ।
Om aim hreem kleem chamundayai vichche. Sarva-mangala mangalye shive sarvartha sadhike.
Om, salutations to Goddess Chamunda. O auspicious one, source of all that is auspicious, fulfiller of all desires — to you we bow.
How to recite
Set up the bommala koluvu (doll display in odd-numbered tiers) on the first day of Navaratri and dismantle it on Vijayadashami evening. Each evening invite married women and children for haldi-kumkum, sing keertanas, and distribute one variety of sundal as prasadam. On Vijayadashami, perform Ayudha Pooja (worship of tools, books, vehicles), Saraswati Pooja for instruments and books, and exchange jammi (shami) leaves in the evening saying 'Jammi-Bangaram' (jammi as gold) with elders.
Benefits
Dasara commemorates Goddess Durga's nine-night battle and tenth-day victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, and Sri Rama's victory over Ravana on the same day. In Telugu households, the bommala koluvu doll display preserves family heirlooms across generations, the Ayudha Pooja sanctifies the tools of one's livelihood, and the jammi-leaf exchange recalls the Pandavas reclaiming their weapons from the shami tree at the end of their thirteenth year of exile. The day is considered the most auspicious of the year for beginning new ventures, learning, or travel.
✦ Special Note
Per the Drik Panchang for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Some families observe the bommala koluvu only in alternating years.
