Somavara (Monday) is sacred to Lord Shiva, and the Mondays of Shravana (Shraavana) month are considered the holiest of all. Lingayat devotees observe a fruit fast on these days, performing elaborate Ishtalinga puja and reciting Basavanna's Vacanas. The Shravana Somavara fast is observed with particular devotion across Karnataka

Mantra

ಓಂ ನಮಃ ಶಿವಾಯ

Om Namah Shivaya

Om Namah Shivaya — salutation to Lord Shiva on his sacred day, Monday

How to recite

Chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' 108 times in the morning while performing Ishtalinga puja. Monday (Somavara / Shivavar) is Shiva's day — begin the day with abhishek and wear the Ishtalinga with devotion.

Benefits

Shravana Somavara fasting pleases Lord Shiva immensely. Basavanna taught that the Ishtalinga is Shiva himself — worshipping it sincerely on Mondays in the holy month of Shravana is said to fulfil desires, remove obstacles, and advance the soul toward liberation (aikya — union with Shiva).

✦ Special Note

Shravana Somavara fasts are among the most widely observed in the Lingayat community. Each Monday of Shravana month, hold your Ishtalinga during morning puja, chant the Panchakshara ('Om Namah Shivaya'), and observe a fruit fast until evening. Visit your local Shiva mandir or perform puja at home. Basavanna's Vacanas make for ideal reading on these sacred days.
