Saraswati Puja — the Bengali Shakta worship of Maa Saraswati on Magha Shukla Panchami (Vasant Panchami). The second-largest festival in Bengal after Durga Puja. Every neighbourhood, school, university, college, and home erects a Saraswati pandal or altar; children dress in yellow saris and dhotis; the day is filled with music, recitation, and pushpanjali. Belur Math, Dakshineshwar, and every Saraswati mandir see massive crowds.

Dates 2026–2027

February 11, 2027

Mantra

या कुन्देन्दु तुषार हार धवला या शुभ्र वस्त्रावृता। या वीणा वर दण्ड मण्डित करा या श्वेत पद्मासना॥

Ya kundendu tushara hara dhavala ya shubhra vastravrita | Ya vina vara danda mandita kara ya shveta padmasana ||

Salutations to Maa Saraswati — white as jasmine, the moon, and snow; clothed in pure white; holding the veena; seated on the white lotus. (The Saraswati dhyana shloka chanted in every Bengali home and school.)

How to recite

On Magha Shukla Panchami, set up the Saraswati altar with white cloth, palasha flowers, sown barley, books, musical instruments, and pens (everything connected to vidya is placed at Devi's feet for blessing). At sunrise, perform pushpanjali (flower offering) — three rounds in chorus, the central ritual every Bengali child participates in. Bhog of khichuri-labra-payesh-boro is offered. Children are kept away from books for the day (Saraswati holds them — they should not be touched). Hate-khori (first-letter writing) is done for young children at the altar.

Benefits

Saraswati Puja on Vasant Panchami marks the start of vasant ritu (spring) and the appearance of Devi Saraswati. In Bengal, this is the SECOND-largest festival after Durga Puja — every neighbourhood, school, university, and home erects a Saraswati altar. Worship on this day grants vidya (knowledge), wani-shakti (eloquence), and success in studies, music, and the arts.

✦ Special Note

The 2026 Saraswati Puja (23 Jan 2026) has already passed; the next observance is 11 Feb 2027. The first kul (jujube) of the season is traditionally not eaten until offered to Saraswati on this day. Dates per the Gupta Press Panjika (guptapresspanjika.org — the standard Bengali almanac since 1869), following its Amanta (Bengali) lunar convention with months ending on Amavasya (new moon), as used for Kali worship and dark-fortnight rituals; cross-checked against astronomical tithi computation.
