Phalaharini Kali Puja — the Jyeshtha Amavasya worship of Maa Kali as Phalaharini (consumer of karmic fruits). Observed at Dakshineshwar, Belur Math, every Ramakrishna Mission centre, and across Bengali Shakta homes. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa worshipped Sri Sarada Devi as Shodashi-Tripura-Sundari on this night in 1872 — the founding moment of the Holy Mother's recognition as living Devi.

Mantra

ॐ क्रीं क्रीं क्रीं ह्रीं ह्रीं ह्रूं ह्रूं फलहारिण्यै नमः

Om Kreem Kreem Kreem Hreem Hreem Hum Hum Phalaharinyai Namah

Salutations to Maa Phalaharini — Kali who consumes the fruits (phala) of all karma, leaving the devotee free.

How to recite

On Jyeshtha Amavasya night, fast through the day on phalahar only. At midnight (the muhurta of Sri Ramakrishna's worship of Sarada Devi), set up the Devi altar with kalash, hibiscus garland, and Phalaharini Kali murti or photo. Offer 108 hibiscus flowers, 108 ghee diyas, mango, coconut, and bhog. Recite the Karpuradi Stotram and the Devi Mahatmyam Chapter 7. After arati, offer pranam and take prasad as parana.

Benefits

Phalaharini Kali Puja is held in the Ramakrishna lineage as the most sacred Kali puja of the year — even more transformative than Diwali Kali Puja. Maa Phalaharini consumes the karma-phala (fruits of past actions) of the devotee, granting liberation from the cycle of action and consequence. The 1872 worship of Sri Sarada Devi by Sri Ramakrishna established this tithi as the Shodashi-puja day for the entire Ramakrishna sangha.

✦ Special Note

Belur Math and Dakshineshwar perform the Shodashi puja with full Tantric ritual on this night. The 16-armed Phalaharini-Kali murti at Belur Math is the iconic Bengali Shakta darshan. Dates per the Gupta Press Panjika (guptapresspanjika.org — the standard Bengali almanac since 1869), following its Amanta (Bengali) lunar convention with months ending on Amavasya (new moon), as used for Kali worship and dark-fortnight rituals; cross-checked against astronomical tithi computation.
