Om Nagadevataya Namah / Om Namah Shivaya
Salutations to the Naga-deities; Om Namah Shivaya
How to recite
Visit a local Naga-mandir (every Karnataka village has one) for the special Nagara Panchami puja. Offer milk and tambittu (sweet rice-flour preparation) to the Naga-stones (Naga-kallu). Hold and worship the Ishtalinga while chanting Om Namah Shivaya. Karnataka tradition: no frying or chopping of vegetables on Nagara Panchami day (the chopping-board is associated with the Naga's body).
Benefits
Nagara Panchami — Shravana Shukla Panchami — celebrates the Naga-devatas as forms of Shiva's Vasuki (the serpent around his neck) and Adisesha (the bed of Vishnu). Particularly important in Karnataka where every village has a Naga-kallu (carved snake-stone shrine). For Lingayats, the Naga is venerated as a symbol of the kundalini-shakti rising through the spine to merge with Shiva.
✦ Special Note
