Sant Janabai Punyatithi — Ashadh Shukla Trayodashi, 1350 CE. The first woman-sant of the Warkari corpus and the only sant in any Indic tradition to whose abhangas the Lord himself is the protagonist. Her samadhi at Pandharpur is adjacent to Namdev's. Observed on the same day as Namdev Punyatithi by all Warkaris still gathered at Pandharpur after Ashadhi Ekadashi.

Mantra

विठू माझा लेकुरवाळा

Vithu maajha lekurvaala

My Vitthal is full of children — Janabai's most famous abhanga, in which Vitthal himself comes to grind millet and gather cow-dung with her in the courtyard.

How to recite

Sing the abhangas of Sant Janabai — especially 'Vithu maajha lekurvaala', 'Dhava re Vitthala', and her Garbhagrihaachi abhangas. Read her 'Dnyaneshwar Niryan' (her abhanga-narration of Mauli's samadhi) at sunset. Offer naivedya at the women's-courtyard of the local Vithoba mandir.

Benefits

Sant Janabai (1258-1350) was Sant Namdev's lifelong dasi (maid-disciple) at Pandharpur — born to a Shudra family at Gangakhed, dedicated to the Namdev household by her father. She composed ~300 abhangas of which the most famous record Vitthal coming to her courtyard at night to grind millet, gather cow-dung cakes, and even comb her hair. She attained mahasamadhi the same day as Namdev — Ashadh Shukla Trayodashi, 1350 CE. Her grace gives the bhakta the certainty that Vitthal does the chores of those who love him.

✦ Special Note

Janabai's abhangas have been the seed-poetry for centuries of Maharashtra women's bhakti. 'Strivani' (women's-voice abhanga) as a category begins with her. Pandharpur's women-Warkaris hold a special kirtan in her honour at her samadhi. Per the Marathi Drik Panchang (Amanta system) — Ashadh Shukla Trayodashi.
