Mantra
गोरोबा काका की जय
Goroba Kaka ki Jaya
Victory to Sant Gora Kumbhar — the potter-saint who tested the spiritual ripeness of every other sant by tapping their head with his measuring-stick.
How to recite
Sing the abhangas of Sant Gora Kumbhar. Visit Terdhoki if possible (his samadhi-place near Osmanabad). Tap the earthenware pot at home gently in his memory before the evening kirtan.
Benefits
Sant Gora Kumbhar (~1267-1317) was the elder of all Warkari sants, the potter-saint of Terdhoki. He once tested the 'pakvadasha' (spiritual ripeness) of all the assembled sants — Mauli, Namdev, Tukaram (anachronistically in the gatha), Chokhamela — by tapping each head with his potter's measuring-stick, and pronouncing all 'kachcha' (unripe) except Mauli. His grace gives the courage of unflinching honesty in the spiritual life.
✦ Special Note
Goroba Kaka's measuring-stick — used in the famous 'pakvadasha-pariksha' — is preserved at Terdhoki and is touched to the head of every Warkari pilgrim who visits, in memory of his testing. Per the Marathi Drik Panchang (Amanta system) — Vaishakh Krishna Trayodashi.
