Ashadhi Wari Palkhi Prasthan — the day the Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi departs Alandi and the Tukaram Maharaj palkhi departs Dehu, beginning the 21-day, ~250 km foot-pilgrimage to Pandharpur. The largest religious foot-procession on Earth — 8-12 lakh Warkaris walk in dindis (groups of 50-200) along the centuries-old palkhi-marg, singing abhanga-kirtan continuously, sleeping in roadside shelters, and arriving at Pandharpur on Ashadhi Ekadashi for the Vitthal-darshan.

Mantra

ज्ञानोबा-तुकाराम ज्ञानोबा-तुकाराम

Jnanoba-Tukaram Jnanoba-Tukaram

Dnyanoba (Mauli) and Tukaram, Dnyanoba and Tukaram — the continuous walking-mantra of the Wari, taken from the universal Warkari salutation.

How to recite

If walking the Wari, chant continuously with the dindi (the walking-group) to the rhythm of the steps. If at home, set up the home altar with the palkhi-padukas image, sing Haripath at sunrise and Tukaram-gatha at sunset, and follow the palkhi-route via the daily Sansthan updates from Alandi and Dehu. The 21-day walk covers ~250 km from Alandi/Dehu to Pandharpur, arriving on Ashadhi Ekadashi.

Benefits

Walking the Wari is the highest sadhana in the Warkari path — Mauli says one step on the Wari burns the karma of one lifetime. The Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi departs Alandi (Mauli's samadhi) and the Tukaram Maharaj palkhi departs Dehu (Tukoba's birthplace) on this day, carrying the saints' silver padukas in palanquins for the 21-day walk to Pandharpur. The two palkhis meet at Wakhri on the eve of Ashadhi Ekadashi for the final entry into Pandharpur.

✦ Special Note

The exact departure date is set annually by the Alandi Devasthan and the Dehu Sansthan — typically 18-21 days before Ashadhi Ekadashi. The palkhi-route, the dindi-organisation, and the daily haalta (camp-stop) schedule are published every year in the Warkari calendar. Prasthan dates are set by Alandi Devasthan / Dehu Sansthan; cross-checked with the Marathi Drik Panchang (Amanta system).
