Shakambhari Purnima — Pausha Purnima — the climax of the 8-day Shakambhari Navaratri. Devi as Shakambhari (literally 'she who is borne by greens') is worshipped with every vegetable, fruit, and grain piled on the altar. The Shakambhari Devi Shaktipeeth at Sambhar in Rajasthan, and the Banashankari peeth in Karnataka, see massive yatras on this night.

Mantra

जगन्मातर्नमस्तेस्तु शाकम्भरि शिवप्रिये। तव पादांबुजं देवि नमामि सततं भक्त्या॥

Jagan-matar namaste-stu Shakambhari Shiva-priye | Tava pada-ambujam Devi namami satatam bhaktya ||

Salutations to you, O Shakambhari — Mother of the universe, beloved of Shiva. With devotion I bow to your lotus feet always. (Devi Mahatmyam Chapter 11)

How to recite

On Pausha Purnima (full moon of Pausha), prepare a Shakambhari altar laden with every fresh vegetable, fruit, grain, and green available — the pile is the puja. Light a single ghee diya. Recite the Devi Mahatmyam Chapter 11 (Narayani Stuti, where Shakambhari is named). Offer the entire spread to Devi, then distribute as prasad. The 8-day Shakambhari Navaratri (Pausha Shukla 8 to Pausha Purnima) culminates today.

Benefits

Shakambhari Purnima commemorates the appearance of Devi as Shakambhari — when the world faced a 100-year drought, she manifested every green, grain, and fruit from her own body to feed humanity. Worship on this day is held to grant: never-ending food in the household, freedom from hunger across lifetimes, and Devi's protection over agriculture and harvest. Especially sacred at Shakambhari Devi Shaktipeeth (Sambhar, Rajasthan).

✦ Special Note

The 8-day Shakambhari Navaratri runs from Pausha Shukla Ashtami to Pausha Purnima — a less-known fourth Shakta Navaratri (along with Chaitra, Sharadiya, and the two Gupta Navaratris). Pausha Purnima 2026 (3 Jan) has already passed; the next observance is 22 Jan 2027. Dates per Drik Panchang (drikpanchang.com, Bengal/Amavasyanta reckoning), cross-checked against astronomical tithi computation.
