Pournami (Full Moon Vratam) — observed every full-moon day in Telugu households with a sunrise-to-moon-rise fast (ekabhuktam), the family-deity puja, arghya to the moon, and recitation of a Pournami stotra such as the Lalita Sahasranama, Vishnu Sahasranama, or the Satyanarayana Vratam Katha.
Dates 2026–2027
Mantra
ॐ चन्द्राय नमः । ॐ सोमाय नमः । ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ।
Om chandraya namah. Om somaya namah. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya.
Salutations to Chandra. Salutations to Soma (the moon-deity). Salutations to Bhagavan Vasudeva.
How to recite
Pournami is observed every full-moon day with bathing before sunrise, fasting through the day (single ekabhuktam meal taken after the puja), and offering arghya (water with rice and flowers) to the moon at moon-rise. Set up the family shrine with a fresh kalasham, perform the shodashopachara puja to the family deity, light a ghee-deepam, recite the chosen Pournami stotra (Lalita Sahasranama, Vishnu Sahasranama, or the Satyanarayana Vratam Katha for those families who observe it on Pournami), and conclude with aarti and distribution of prasadam.
Benefits
Pournami is one of the most spiritually charged days of the lunar month in Telugu households. The full moon is associated with mental clarity, calmness, and the rising of satvic energies. The vratam is observed for the well-being of the family, peace of mind, freedom from anxiety, and the fulfilment of family vows. Particularly important Pournami observances through the year include Chaitra Pournami (Hanuman Jayanti), Vaisakha Pournami (Buddha Pournami), Ashadha Pournami (Guru Pournami), Shravana Pournami (Raksha Bandhan), and Kartika Pournami.
✦ Special Note
Per the Drik Panchang for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Dates listed cover every Pournami from May 2026 through December 2027. Some Pournamis (Chaitra, Vaisakha, Ashadha, Shravana, Kartika) carry additional observance.
