The solar festival marking the Sun's entry into Capricorn (Makar) — one of the few Hindu festivals on a fixed solar date, celebrated with sesame, jaggery, kite-flying, and charitable giving
Dates 2026–2027
Mantra
ॐ सूर्याय नमः
Om Suryaya Namaha — I bow to the Sun God, the source of all light, warmth, and life on earth
✦ Special Note
Per Drik Panchang. Makar Sankranti 2026: Wednesday, January 14 (Sankranti moment 10:43 AM; Punya Kala 10:43 AM–5:03 PM). Makar Sankranti 2027: Thursday, January 14. This is a solar transit (Sun entering sidereal Capricorn/Makara), not a tithi — both years verified astronomically against the 270° Lahiri sidereal crossing. The tradition of 'til-gul ghya, god god bola' (take sesame-jaggery and speak sweetly) is exchanged between friends and family. Donate sesame, blankets, and warm clothing to those in need — especially important in winter. Many observe a day of fasting or eating only khichdi as a sacred offering to Surya.
