Jhulan Yatra — five days from Shravana Shukla Ekadashi to Shravana Purnima (Raksha Bandhan). Ramanandi mathas at Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, and Janakpur set up elaborate flower-jhulas (swings) for the Sita-Ram darbar. Each evening through the five days, devotees gather to swing the deities, sing Jhulan-bhajans, and offer monsoon-sweet bhog.

Mantra

झूलत श्री सीताराम जय जय श्री सीताराम

Jhulat Shri Sita-Ram · Jaya Jaya Shri Sita-Ram

Sri Sita-Ram swing on the flower-jhula — glory, glory to Sri Sita-Ram who delight us in the monsoon swing-festival.

How to recite

Decorate a small wooden jhula (swing) with marigold, jasmine, and rose flowers. Place small Sita-Ram murtis on it and gently swing while singing Jhulan-bhajans through the five evenings (Shravana Shukla Ekadashi to Purnima). Offer sweet bhog. Family and bhaktas take turns swinging the deities. The swing represents the cooling, restful joy of the monsoon for the divine couple.

Benefits

Jhulan Yatra is the five-day monsoon swing-festival, when Sri Sita-Ram (and Radha-Krishna in other Vaishnava sampradayas) are placed on a flower-decked swing for evening seva. For Ramanandis, this is one of the most joyful and intimate sevas of the year — the divine couple is offered the monsoon's coolness in the form of a gentle swing while bhaktas sing.

✦ Special Note

The closing day — Shravana Purnima — coincides with Raksha Bandhan. Sisters tie rakhi to Sri Ram (and to Hanuman ji) at the Ramanandi mandirs, asking for his protection through the year. Dates per the standard Vikram Samvat Panchang (Purnimanta system — month boundary at Purnima), Ayodhya/Varanasi convention; same underlying calendar as Hindu general, Purnimanta month naming.
