Govardhan Puja / Annakut — Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day after Diwali. Every Ramanandi mandir at Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, and Janakpur builds a Govardhana-replica beside the Ram darbar and offers the 56-item chappan bhog. The day is a celebration of abundance, gratitude, and Bhagavan's protective grace.

Mantra

गोवर्धन धारी श्री राम जय जय गोवर्धन धारी

Govardhan Dhari Shri Ram · Jai Jai Govardhan Dhari

Glory to Sri Ram who lifted Govardhana — the same Bhagavan who lifted the mountain to shelter Vraja from Indra's wrath.

How to recite

Build a small Govardhana representation from cow dung, rice, or mud, decorated with flowers and grass — placed beside the Ram darbar. Arrange 56 (chappan) sweet and savoury items as a giri-mountain in front of the deities. Perform parikrama (circumambulation) of the giri while singing Govardhan-bhajans and Hari-naam. After arati, distribute the entire annakut as mahaprasad.

Benefits

Annakut — Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day after Diwali — commemorates the day Sri Krishna lifted Govardhana to shelter Vraja from Indra's seven-day rainstorm. For Ramanandis, the same Bhagavan who is Sri Ram is the lifter of Govardhana — and the 56-item bhog is offered to the Ram darbar in giri arrangement. The Annakut ensures abundance and food-security in the home for the year.

✦ Special Note

Many Ramanandi grihasthas observe a partial fast in the morning (only fruits and milk) and break the fast with the annakut bhog after the noon arati — making the day's first meal entirely deity-prasad. Dates per the standard Vikram Samvat Panchang (Purnimanta system — month boundary at Purnima), Ayodhya/Varanasi convention; same underlying calendar as Hindu general, Purnimanta month naming.

Foods Allowed

56-item bhog (chappan bhog) — every grain, daal, sabzi, sweet, and farsan offered to the Ram darbar in a giri-mountain arrangementKhichdi, kadhi, puri, halwa, gulab jamun, peda, jalebiSeasonal vegetables — pumpkin, cauliflower, sweet potato, radish, fenugreekKhoya barfi, mohanthal, ladoo, kheer, basundiCharanamrita and tulsi from the Ram darbarAll bhog is sweet, satvik, no onion-garlic — offered first to the giri-arrangement, then distributed

Foods to Avoid
