Hera Pancami — Asadha Shukla Sasthi (5 days after Ratha Yatra) — the day Sri Lakshmi Devi visits Sri Jagannatha at the Gundicha mandir to bring Him back to the main temple. The mana-lila (love-quarrel) between Lakshmi and Jagannatha is reenacted at Puri with Lakshmi's palanquin processing to Gundicha and 'demanding' the Lord's return. Observed at all major ISKCON temples with Jagannatha deities.

Mantra

श्री लक्ष्मी जगन्नाथाय नमः / Sri Lakshmi-Jagannathaya Namah

Sri Lakshmi-Jagannathaya Namah

Salutations to Sri Lakshmi and Sri Jagannatha together

How to recite

Read the Sri Caitanya-caritamrita description of Hera Pancami — Sri Lakshmi's loving anger at Sri Jagannatha for leaving the main temple without Her. Offer flowers to Lakshmi Devi at your home altar. Chant 16 rounds.

Benefits

Hera Pancami captures the love-mood (mana-lila) of Sri Lakshmi Devi when Sri Jagannatha leaves Her at the main temple to spend nine days at the Gundicha. She arrives at the Gundicha in a grand palanquin to confront Him — and the entire Puri reenacts this divine love-quarrel. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu cherished this lila as the model of the gopis' loving separation from Krishna.

✦ Special Note

Per the Mayapur Vaishnava Calendar. The Sri Caitanya-caritamrita (Madhya 14) gives a detailed and ecstatic description of this lila as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu witnessed it at Puri. This day is particularly dear to ISKCON devotees who have observed Sri Caitanya's Puri pastimes.
