Vasant Panchami / Saraswati Puja — Magha Shukla Panchami, the first day of spring and the festival of Saraswati. How to recite
Vasant Panchami (Magha Shukla Panchami) is the first day of spring and the festival of Saraswati, goddess of learning, music, and the arts. Wake at dawn, bathe, and dress in yellow (the color of mustard fields in flower across Marwar). Perform Saraswati puja at the family altar or village mandir: offer yellow flowers, saffron, kesar, books, musical instruments, and the day's first writings of small children (akshar-abhyasam — many Bishnoi families perform their child's first writing initiation today). Recite Saraswati Vandana ('Ya Kundendu...'). Spend the day in study, music, or art — no idleness on Saraswati's day. Many Bishnoi village schools hold collective puja for all students. The mustard fields of Marwar in full yellow bloom are themselves Saraswati's blessing — the ecological and devotional layers fuse.

Vasant Panchami marks the start of spring and the awakening of Marwar from its winter dormancy. Saraswati's veneration aligns with the Bishnoi commitment to learning (Guru Jambheshwar himself emphasized study of his Shabadvani as core practice). The akshar-abhyasam initiation of small children on this day is a beloved Bishnoi family tradition — many adults can recall the day they first wrote 'Om' in saffron under their elder's hand.
