Bishnoi Holi (Phalgun Purnima) — the spring color festival observed by Bishnois with strict environmental discipline. No green wood is cut for Holika dahan (niyam #16), no chemical colors are used (they harm birds and the environment that the 29 niyams protect), and only phool gulal made from palash, marigold, and rose petals is played with. A quiet, ecological Holi that has been practiced unchanged since the 15th century.
Dates 2026–2027
Mantra
विष्णो विष्णो तू भजे रे प्राणी
Vishno Vishno tu bhaje re prani
O living being, chant Vishnu, chant Vishnu — Jambhoji's mool mantra, recited at Holi sandhya before the natural-color celebration.
How to recite
On Phalgun Purnima morning: bathe, perform sandhya, recite Jambhoji's Shabadvani at the Bishnoi mandir or home altar. In the evening, gather with the community for dhol and bhajan — but do NOT light a Holika dahan with green wood (niyam #16 forbids cutting living trees). If a symbolic dahan is held, only dry deadfall or cow-dung cakes are used. The next morning, play Holi only with phool gulal (rose, marigold, palash flowers ground to powder) and kesar-water — never chemical colors which harm birds and the environment.
Benefits
Holi for Bishnois is a spring renewal festival celebrating the bond between people, trees, and wildlife — not the chaotic chemical-color play seen elsewhere. The 1730 Khejarli sacrifice gave Bishnoi Holi its quiet, ecological character: Amrita Devi's descendants observe the day with restrained joy, gratitude to the Khejri tree, and renewed commitment to the 29 niyams. Phool gulal made from palash (tesu) flowers is itself a Bishnoi craft passed down through generations.
