Devshayani Ekadashi — the day Lord Vishnu (worshipped as Vitthal at Pandharpur) enters yoga-nidra for chaturmas. The grandest day in the Warkari calendar. Lakhs of Warkaris reach Pandharpur on this day after walking 250+ km from Alandi (Sant Dnyaneshwar's samadhi) and Dehu (Sant Tukaram's birthplace), carrying palkhis with the saints' padukas, chanting Vitthala-naam continuously for 21 days.

Mantra

विठ्ठल विठ्ठल विठ्ठल जय हरि विठ्ठल

Vitthala Vitthala Vitthala Jaya Hari Vitthala

O Vitthal, O Vitthal, O Vitthal — victory to Hari Vitthal. The universal name chanted by Warkaris on the Pandharpur Wari.

How to recite

Chant continuously with mridanga, taal, and chiplya. The Warkari kirtan tradition of Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar holds that the simple repetition of Vitthala-naam is itself the highest sadhana. Recite Haripath (28 abhangas of Dnyaneshwar) once before sunrise and once at sunset.

Benefits

Removes the sense of separation from God. Sant Namdev says 'Naam smaranane Pandurang prasanna hoto' — remembrance of the name itself pleases Vitthal. The Wari pilgrimage purifies lifetimes of karma.

✦ Special Note

Pandharpur Wari peaks on this day. Warkaris do nirjala or fruit-only fast and sing Haripath continuously. The 'Mauli' palanquin from Alandi and 'Tukoba' from Dehu meet at Wakhri before the final entry into Pandharpur. Per the Marathi Drik Panchang (Amanta system). Warkari Ekadashi follows the Bhagwat (Vaishnava) rule — when the Ekadashi tithi spans two days, the fast falls on the second day.
