Shani Jayanti — the appearance day of Lord Shani (Saturn) — falls on Jyeshtha Amavasya (the new moon of Jyeshtha month). Shani Dev, son of Surya and Chhaya and the cosmic dispenser of karmic justice, is worshipped on this day to mitigate Sade Sati, Shani Dhaiya, and all malefic Saturn influences. Observed with a strict satvik fast (no oil, no salt other than sendha namak, no non-veg, no onion-garlic), abhishek with mustard oil at Shani temples, recitation of the Dasharatha-krit Shani Stotra, circumambulation of the peepal tree, and daan of black sesame, black urad, iron, and mustard oil to the needy.

Mantra
ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः | नीलाञ्जन समाभासं रविपुत्रं यमाग्रजम् | छायामार्ताण्ड संभूतं तं नमामि शनैश्चरम् ||
Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namaha | Nilanjana samabhasam Raviputram Yamagrajam | Chhayamartanda sambhutam tam namami Shanaishcharam ||
Salutations to Shani Dev. I bow to Shanaishchara — dark like collyrium, son of Surya, elder brother of Yama, born of Chhaya and the Sun — the slow-moving one.
How to recite
Begin before sunrise with a bath. Light a mustard-oil diya before Shani Dev (or a peepal tree, where Shani is believed to reside on Saturdays). Chant the Shani beej mantra 'Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namaha' 108 times using a black-thread mala, followed by the Dasharatha-krit Shani Stotra. Offer black sesame seeds, black urad dal, blue/black flowers (such as aparajita), and mustard oil. Visit a Shani temple — Shani Shingnapur (Maharashtra), Tirunallar (Tamil Nadu), or your local Navagraha shrine — and circumambulate the peepal tree 7 times pouring water mixed with black sesame at its roots. Donate black clothes, iron, sesame oil, or food to the needy — daan is central to Shani worship.
Benefits
Shani Jayanti is the most powerful day of the year to mitigate the effects of Sade Sati (the 7.5-year Saturn transit), Shani Dhaiya, and any malefic Saturn placement in the natal chart. Sincere observance grants protection from accidents, lawsuits, chronic illness, career setbacks, and obstacles caused by karmic delays. Shani is the karmic judge — devout fasting on his appearance day cleanses past karmic debts and brings discipline, perseverance, and long-term success.
✦ Special Note
Per Drik Panchang. Shani Jayanti 2026: Saturday, May 16 (Jyeshtha Krishna Amavasya at sunrise). Shani Jayanti 2027: June 4. The Amanta calendar (Maharashtra, South India) places this on Vaishakha Amavasya. Pregnant women, the elderly, and those with health conditions should observe a phalahar (fruit-only) fast rather than nirjala. Avoid travel, lending money, and starting new ventures on Shani Jayanti — the day is for inward sadhana and karmic cleansing.
