Maghi commemorates the Battle of Muktsar (1705) in which 40 Sikhs — the Chali Mukte (40 Liberated Ones) — who had earlier abandoned Guru Gobind Singh Ji, returned to fight and attain martyrdom. Guru Gobind Singh Ji forgave them and called them muktas (liberated souls). Sikhs visit Muktsar Sahib for the annual fair and take a dip in the holy sarovar.
