How to recite
Herath is the Kashmiri Pandit observance of Shivaratri, celebrated on Phalguna Krishna Trayodashi (a day before mainstream Maha Shivaratri). Vatuk Bhairav and Shiva-Parvati are installed in earthen pots (vatuk) filled with water and walnuts; a strict water-only fast is held until midnight Shiva puja, after which walnut prasad is distributed. Salam (family visits) follows the next day.
Benefits
Commemorates the cosmic union of Shiva and Shakti — the central festival of the Kashmiri Pandit year. The walnut prasad symbolises hardiness in exile; the water-only vrat purifies the body for Bhairava darshan.
✦ Special Note
Phalguna Krishna Trayodashi night (Vatuk Puja) — the night before Maha Shivratri. Verified Aug 2026: Herath 2026 observed Feb 14 (J&K CM/LG greetings issued Feb 14, 2026; Salam next day), matching the Trayodashi-at-night rule. 2027: Mar 5 (Trayodashi prevails the night of Mar 5, ends midday Mar 6). Reconfirm against a Kashmiri Pandit panchang (e.g. Vijayeshwar) annually.
