Anavasara — the 15-day fortnight after Snana Yatra when Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are kept in the Anasara Ghara recovering from the bathing fever. No public darshan; the Lord is treated with herbal medicines by the daitapatis. Devotees visit Alarnatha or worship the Anasara-pati painting at home.

Dates 2026–2027

June 1, 2026June 20, 2027

Mantra

ॐ श्री जगन्नाथाय नमः। आरोग्यम् देहि।

Om Sri Jagannathaya namah; arogyam dehi

Salutations to Lord Jagannath — please grant good health (to the Lord and to all who serve Him).

How to recite

For 15 days after Snana Yatra the wooden deities are kept in the Anasara Ghara (a private chamber) where the daitapatis attend to Them with herbal medicines (phula-uri, aushadhi-tail, chhana-jaggery). No public darshan is allowed. Devotees worship the painted Anasara-pati (cloth painting of the deities) in homes and at substitute temples (Brahma Giri's Alarnatha is famous for this). Many observe a fast or simplified diet during this fortnight in solidarity with the Lord's recovery.

Benefits

Anavasara teaches that even the Lord accepts illness as part of the cosmic play, and that quiet seva — herbal cures, gentle care, painted darshan — is as devotional as grand festivals. Many devotees travel to Alarnatha (15 km from Puri) where Lord Vishnu is said to receive the displaced devotees during this fortnight.
